Franklin Pierce University’s Marlin Fitzwater Center for Communication is dedicated to educating leaders of conscience in public communication, and over 15 years we have provided extraordinary opportunities to developing student media.
The center’s PoliticsFitzU political reporting unit fields teams of students to cover the Presidential Election cycle as credentialed media. We have have worked at this level since 2006, and we are one of the only schools in the country to offer such comprehensive opportunities to young adults. As any New Hampshire student can tell you, the NH Primary is more than a day of voting. It is months, even years of events, debates, and town halls–and we are on the ground covering as many as we can. This year we partnered with the Boston Herald, and we covered the Iowa Caucuses with its staff. And after the Cleveland and Philadelphia conventions, we were back on the campaign trail, at Dixville Notch, and we will be at the 2017 Presidential Inauguration.
The New Hampshire Charitable Foundation has generously funded the Marlin Fitzwater Center for Communication’s high school summer program, “The Presidency and The Press.” The goal is to mobilize the Granite State’s civically engaged youth to cover the November General Election as part of the New Hampshire Student Media Association. Every participating school receives a free mobile journalism kit that it can use to cover issues, people and events in their communities and to contribute to a mobile news site, Granite State Student Voices.
The NHSMA is dedicated to building a vibrant state-wide network where student media will find their voices in the public discourse that is so essential to the health of our nation’s democracy.
